  • You’re Not Yourself When You’re Hungry

You’re not yourself when you’re hungry. I love that Snickers commercial.  It’s so true!  My wife calls it being “hangry,” a combo of hungry and angry.  We both must be well fed or else things start to get funky in the home. In the same way that food can set me off on the wrong course, things happen in my business that can do the same. An angry client email in the morning will turn me loose against my employees, and the domino effect will eventually lead me to be “off” with the rest of my clients that day. We entrepreneurs will have 99 reasons every day to be upset, rude, curt, and not so pleasant to be around.  Maybe not every day, but we have our times.  Owning a business is stressful! But we have a responsibility to be the light, to be the difference, to be the example of taking the high road. But how do we change from our natural ways of being angry?  How can we be the exception to the rule?  How can we be different? It’s a matter of the HEART.  What we fill ourselves with will eventually show. In the same way that I eat to remove my “hanger”, I need to consume more of God to squeeze out the natural-born killer in me. In the book of Acts chapter 6, we read about Stephen, a many with exceptional spiritual filling. "Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed great wonders and signs among the people." (Acts 6:8) I don’t know about you, but I’ll take an order of whatever he’s eating. Every morning, instead of picking up my phone to check emails and put out fires in my business, I get my filling of spiritual food from God. Maybe this email sent to you daily is your chance to commune with God and hear a message for the day. What I know is this: if we Godpreneurs make getting spiritually fed our first priority for the morning, we will be less “hangry” throughout the day about being able to be a true witness to Christ to others through your daily transactions. It’s easy to see your spiritual life separate from your business life until you realize that your closeness with God has a direct correlation with your relationship with people that do business with you, how you serve them, and how you react to their “hanger”. Godpreneur Rule #89: Godpreneurs get spiritually fed first thing in the morning, the breakfast of champions to prepare them for the rest of the day. #WorkLifeBalance #DifferentiatingMyself

  • Jealousy When Other Entrepreneurs Succeed

Do you get envious when you scroll through Instagram and see other friends that are entrepreneurs succeeding and seemingly doing amazing things? I’ve always struggled with this because I partly do self promotion and partly do marketing of my company. I dance the line of boasting vs. blessings. Have you been involved in conversations with other business owners and felt yourself swelling with either pride or envy? There’s a difference between boasting about your successes, and being genuinely proud of your accomplishments. One causes envy. The other causes people to look at God. Where does being blessed end and boasting begin? Gal. 5:26 says, “Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.” It seems many of us feel the need to validate ourselves through our businesses, yet this is the very thing we are instructed not to do. When talking about our business to others, we might use these passages as a “motive check.” Galatians 6:14 says, “May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” Being blessed is the side I stay on and the side entrepreneurs should be on. When showing a clients work, I’ll try not to say “Look at the work we did” but instead focus on the client and their amazing service or product. So the focus isn’t on me, its on my neighbor. When I land a speaking gig or a bit contract or something amazing happens in my business, I try to call it a blessing so people know that it wasn’t all my doing that bright about the success. That takes the pride off of me and puts it on God. Is God glorified when you speak about your business? #FindMyCalling #BecomeDisciplined

  • Making Business Vision Decisions with God

There’s a lot of decision making when you’re an entrepreneur. I’m constantly making decisions: what’s my next move, who do I contract, who do I call next, what’s most important on my to do, how do I close this deal, where can I get a better deal? And if you’re like me, you’re probably making these decisions alone. This is dangerous for me and you. One IS the loneliest number when it comes to business. The bible talks about there being wise counsel in the multitude. So I have a couple of coaches that I rely on. But the bible also says that if I rely on God and His wisdoms for my business, its like building a house on a rock. When the problems come, I’ll still be left standing. Years ago I made a commitment to strengthen my relationship with God. In making that commitment, I was entering into a partnership that would allow me to have wise counsel whenever I pleased. Are you making business decisions based on what YOU think is good to do, or are you praying and talking to God and reading His Word to find out what HE wants you to do? So that’s what we need to start doing. My commitment in 2015 is to know God better by spending a set time each morning in prayer and meditation, to LISTEN to God’s vision for me, and to FOLLOW THROUGH with what He tells me. #FindMyCalling #ArticulatingMyIdeas

  • A New Morning Routine for Godpreneurs: Gratitude

I can’t remember the last time I said “Thank you God, for blessing me with the gift of entrepreneurism.” As Godpreneurs, we believe we’re on this earth to accomplish a duty and obligation God has set before we were born. But our hearts are still deceitful. It helps to ask ourselves, “Why do I serve the Lord?” Is it to gain His favor, earn His blessings, impress others with our “godliness”, or avoid His wrath? Or is it because He commands me to do it? As entrepreneurs are bombarded with the demands of life on earth, mainly financial demands, we often lose sight of the eternal perspective. I started a new routine in the mornings to help keep me aligned. Start your work day by recognizing who He is and what He has done in your business. This will help you obey Him not from a robotic sense of duty, but from the overflow of thankfulness that is in your heart. Be a Godpreneur because you love God above all things…even over the financial gains. #StrengthenIntegrity #SharpenLeadership

  • You’re Too Successful When…

Being an entrepreneur is akin to a roller coaster ride. When times are good, you’re on top of the world. The ride up is exciting! Success feels so great at the top. But when the drop comes, and as sure as the day is long it will come, hold on tight. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned on this rollercoaster is THANKFULNESS. It is so easy to take credit for the big sale, the huge contract, the amazing new partnership, the hot shot acquisition. But, we must not forget (or let our employees forget) that all of our business successes are blessings that God, in His grace, allowed us to have. And I’m THANKFUL for that, when times are good, bad, happy or sad. But you’re too successful when you forget to give credit where credit is due. We have to learn to put a filter through the good and bad things that happen in our business. If we see it all as a blessing from God, we protect ourselves of the pride of ownership that can come when you’re an entrepreneur. Deuteronomy 6:12 says “be careful that you do not forget the Lord , who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.” On Instagram I read a lot of memes that have awesome “success” quotes. Most are very inspiring. But despite what these quotes may make us think, we have not earned our entrepreneurial blessings. There are other small business owners in less fortunate parts of the world who are far more deserving, but God did not choose to bless them as abundantly as me and you. Others have worked harder for less, yet still humbly accept the blessings God gives them as more than they deserve. When on the roller coaster of business life, remember always to humble yourself and thank God for the blessings He gives you and your business to continue growing to accomplish your mission. #EnhanceFocus

  • The Good Thing About Being Bad

Dude, business is hard. I’m even reluctant to tell people to start a business! I know the suffering and pain I’ve been through and its hard to wish someone well on that journey. But I changed my mind on this. Now I see entrepreneurial people as embarking on an amazing journey that will make them much better people and stronger followers of God…because it has for me. Its all about prospective…God’s perspective. Business life is so hard sometimes because “The LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in” (Proverbs 3:12). Wow…what a comfort it is to know that our loving Father has an eye on our entrepreneurial hardships to make sure that we are not overwhelmed. What a comfort it is to know that none of our suffering is in vain – he will make every bit of it work for our good in one way or another. So the next time the bank account is at $6.37, you need to pray to ask God what exactly He’s trying to reach out and tell you. Did you handle some finances wrong? Were you lazy? Are you dabbling in an industry that doesn’t glorify God? I’m convinced now more than ever that God didn’t let me excel to new greater heights in my career because I was serving and worshiping the nightlife industry, but He has much greater plans for me….and you! In your suffering, hold on to God like never before and you will overcome and grow to new heights. #EnhanceFocus #GainConfidence

  • Sleepless, Tired, Worried Entrepreneurs

Oh how many sleepless, tireless nights I’ve had as an entrepreneur. Sure, sometimes its GO TIME and you have to pull these all nighters, but not every night. As I continue to build my business around God’s entrepreneurial purpose for me, I’m starting to realize that business didn’t have to be so hard and confusing always. Psalms 127:1-2 says “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.” I love sleep. Don’t you? I believe sleep is a metaphor for peace. He grants peace in your business life when we let God build our businesses with us. #WorkLifeBalance

  • Stop Rushing Everything in Business – Part 4: Slowing Down Increases Love

We could all agree that peace is incompatible with rushing things, right? Last few months, I’ve been robbed of my peace. Probably the last few YEARS. I’m always playing catch up, late for appointments, or overdue on what’s due on my end. Truth is, if I took an interior inventory, I don’t feel a deep peace of God in my soul. I don’t sense a grounded, present sense of calm. Instead, it’s a constant war. And yet: I continue to cram more and more into my already overfull life, forcing me to speed up to a frenetic pace, and I rarely slow down long enough to experience God’s peace. Of course, not all busyness is bad. I love being busy writing my blog posts, taking my son for a run so my wife can get a break, launching someone’s brand, and going to CrossFit. These don’t feel like I’m wasting my precious time. My problem isn’t having a lot to do, it’s having TOO MUCH to do! The only way to cram it all in is to kick into hurry gear, and as a tragic result, slip out of love, joy, and peace. And I have too much to do because I’m in a hurry to become someone… Instead of having the peace of knowing, I AM someone. Look, I’m the first to criticize “slow.” Heck, I have a brand called Launch in 2 Days! 😂 My brand’s message is clear: slow is bad, fast is good. But even with Launch in 2 Days, clients call me to launch their businesses, and I have to SLOW them down to stop, create a plan, build a strategy, and THEN prepare ourselves for a launch. A proper, peaceful launch can only happen in 2 days because we slowed down long enough to lay out a plan. The bible says "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." (Colossians 3:15‭-‬17 NIV) In God’s contrarian way of doing business different than the world, the Christian entrepreneur’s value system is turned upside down: hurry is of the devil because his only goal is to rob us of our shalom – our peace with God slow is of Jesus, because Jesus is what love, joy, and peace look like in flesh and blood. What about you? Do you have a spirit of peace right now or anxiety? I don’t think I’m alone. For that next idea you have, simply do nothing. Just be. Stand in silent love before God. Try to sit long enough for the peace of God’s Spirit to well up inside of you for as long as you can, and thank him for it. And when you’re ready to launch your brand PEACEFULLY, follow the Launch in 2 Days system. Slow down to let the Spirit plan and lead you to efficiently and effectively launch your calling. Learn more about the Launch system here. #TimeManagement

  • Drop It, Leave It, Let it Go

In 2014 I made a huge decision for my business. Since 2005, we had primarily served the nightlife industry with graphics and websites.  But I had began to grow tired of serving the demanding nightlife world, and it wasn’t fulfilling anymore.  On top of that, I just didn’t feel it was something God wanted me to be in. But how do I let go of 90% of my revenue? Where would the rest come from?  These are the questions I struggled with.  But I felt a peace about a new direction God wanted me to go in: help tens of thousands find their identity brand. From one day to the next, I pulled the trigger. It came with some lay offs and a whole lot of uncertainty and prayer. I believe that if I wouldn’t have made that decision, I wouldn’t be writing this blog today. You wouldn’t be reading this email. I wouldn’t have increased my relationship with God to the level it is at today. And my business wouldn’t certainly be as blessed as it is today. There are times you will come in your business where God will ask you to drop it, leave it, and let it go.  But he’ll also back it up with a vision. In the Bible we see a clear example of this in Genesis 12:1 “Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go out from your country, your relatives, and your father’s household to the land that I will show you. 2 Then I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great, so that you will exemplify divine blessing.” God went on to come through with exactly what he promised, and today we’re all a living testimony to a vision fulfilled by God, through obedience followed by Abraham. What visions have you had come true? What did you do to bring them to pass? Perhaps God gave you a dream of a certain type of business, and you did it and you’re in it!  Congrats!!!! Or, what visions has God given you that you have NOT pursued?  What could you be missing out on by not dropping, leaving, and letting go? God is a vision-giver; He has visions for each of us that He intends to bring to pass if we listen and obey. Because of His greatness, He is able to fulfill those visions if we follow His lead and direction. Godpreneur Rule #81:  Godpreneurs first listen, then obey, and lastly follow. #DifferentiatingMyself #FindingMyPurpose
