  • What Business Does God Want Me to Start?

Have you ever heard someone say “I was born to do this!”? Why is it that some people have a knack for crunching numbers and others have a talent of throwing footballs? Here is the good news: be encouraged that God equips us specifically to do the things He has called us to do! That is the beauty of gifts and talents – they enable us to be the entrepreneurs God intended. Of course, the reverse is also true – when we try to start a business other than what God has enabled us to do, we fall outside His entrepreneurial design for us and we are destined to fall short. As Christian entrepreneurs, we should spend our lives discovering and using our spiritual gifts and business talents. This pursuit is essential if we are to accomplish God’s entrepreneurial purpose for us, because we can’t do anything for Him without the gifts He gave us. With those gifts, however, we can accomplish a lot in our businesses. I, Alex Miranda, have a spiritual gift of prophesy, exhortation and teaching to help entrepreneurs uncover their God-given gifts, cultivate them and help them put them to work, for the glory of the Lord. Actively finding out your gifts and talents will be the single most important thing you’ll do in your entrepreneurial career. Next most important is putting them to use. If you need help finding yours, please take my Entrepreneurial Vision Experience course. #EnhanceFocus #FindingMyPurpose

  • Praying For Your Business

Imagine if we spent as much time praying for our business as we spent looking through social media, watching TV, or the other things we do throughout the day that consume our time. But its tough to remember, especially if you haven’t developed the habit. Here is what I do. I have a calendar reminder set to repeat every weekday from 8 to 8:15 that has a list of things I need to do. One of them is pray for my business. Here’s what I pray for, in this order:  Pray by name for JVs, prospects, customers, employees, vendors, contractors, connectors, future customers, cities I want to be in or are in already, competitors, enemies (that’s powerful), ex employees, ex partners and current partners. Godpreneur Rule #28: Pray for your business daily. #TimeManagement #WorkLifeBalance

  • The Prodigal Entrepreneur

I don’t know about you, but when things start to go great in my business, I do less praying and seeking of God, and more marketing and seeking of money. But then the roller coaster takes a dip, and the pipeline dries up and we find ourselves scrambling for the next check. But God will do whatever it takes to bring us Godpreneurs back into communion with Him. In the famous story of the prodigal son, it took a series of events before the rebellious boy “came to his senses” and decided to return to his dad in repentance. He ran out of money, was deserted by all his so-called friends, and was starving. He found himself working in a pigpen, hungering for the miserable seedpods the pigs were eating. It’s easy for us to think, ‘well that boy deserved it after what he did!’. But you and I become prodigal sons with the times are good, and God will do whatever it takes to bring us back….even if it means drying up your bank account, taking away your biggest client, or removing a superstar employee. The blow can come in 100 different ways, but I’ve learned to love these moments where God is really showing He loves me and is jealous for my attention. And you know what? When I come back, He has new visions and messages for me, and I’m stronger than before. Godpreneur Rule #74: Sometimes it takes difficulties in our business to drive wandering entrepreneurs back to God. #StrengthenIntegrity #BecomeDisciplined

  • Inspiration is What Sets Godpreneurs Apart

Sometimes a prospective client calls in and tells me, “Alex, my business is not doing well, I’ve tried everything and I don’t know what to do.  I think I need a new website.” I start asking a variety of questions, and through my diagnosis, I identify the solution and the brand is revealed to me and I share the idea with the client and it’s like MAGIC! These meetings feel soooo good because I really feel like I was used in an amazing way to help someone. But sometimes I just don’t get it.  I don’t get the inspiration I need to figure it out. I’m not able to nail the brand this person needs. I can’t connect to the identity of this person or company. We all have times in our business where we nail it, and other times where we can’t figure it out. One makes us feel great, the other one makes us feel inadequate and questions our talent and ability.  We might even think we’re losing our touch, and might be time for a change in career direction. In the past, I would just tell myself that this client wasn’t for me, and I’d dismiss him as if there was something wrong with him that he needs to figure out. But what if we’re exactly what the person needs, we just need the right words to say…the right perspective on their problem. I believe God has given us Godpreneurs a great example of what it would be like to help anyone that comes across our path…because they must be in front of us for a reason. At the end of Acts chapter 9, we see Peter going around and healing people and raiding people from the dead. Peter must have realized that when Jesus sent the Holy Spirit, it was for more than preaching and speaking in tongues. It was a spirit of power—the Spirit of Christ. You and I, as Godpreneurs, also have the Spirit of Christ in us.  And even the most seemingly impossible situations are times that the Spirit can do its work.  Peter wasn’t a doctor, and he had never raised anyone from the dead.  But he saw Jesus do it, and Jesus said “the same power that’s in me is in you.” We Godpreneurs need to always realize that we have the power of the Holy Spirit to bring into any of our business dealings. A sale that seems impossible to close is not impossible for the Spirit. A person you want on your team, inspiration for an idea for a client, or a huge presentation you need to give….all of these are times where God sent us the Holy Spirit. Godpreneur Rule #70: Inspiration, which means “spirit within”, is what sets Godpreneurs apart. #WheretoStartFirst #AgencyOwners #FindingMyPurpose

  • Overcoming Work Addiction: Step 3 – Call It Out

As I’ve already shared, when I would face problems in my marriage, I would immediately go upstairs and start working on one of the thousands to-do’s on my business. Sometimes I would get so upset that I would get dressed and leave to work…On a Saturday, on a Sunday, at night…Whenever. No rules. Just get up and go. I’ve never shared this with anyone, but since I’m being vulnerable…Sometimes I would fake a meeting at the office just to leave the house sooner and not have to deal with the issues at home. Yup. That’s me. I found releif and comfort in working. It felt productive. It felt like I was getting back at her while getting work done. Hey, two birds with one stone…Right? It gets worst. When my wife would complain about me working too much, I always took it as an attack on my identity, covering my addiction up by telling her I was working towards our future so we didn’t have to work so much later. Biggest lie ever. There will be no “future us” if we don’t survive the “present us“. When we face adversity and stress in our lives, we Entrepreneurs will tend to work more. Working feels good to us, so we fall back on it. The bigger the problems, the more we want to work. It doesn’t matter if the problem is from family, finances, clients, employees…We just fall back on working more. Ironically, we fall back on to-do lists, which are the most unproductive tasks. We can’t get to the productive tasks because our mindset isn’t right. It’s a vicious cycle. What’s going on here?  Why is our identity so wrapped up in entrepreneurship that it’s become an addiction?  How can we get our minds back in line with the right way? What’s the right way anyway?. I believe the Bible tells us what’s going wrong here. The Bible says "Therefore speak to them and tell them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When any of the Israelites set up idols in their hearts and put a wicked stumbling block before their faces and then go to a prophet, I the Lord will answer them myself in keeping with their great idolatry. I will do this to recapture the hearts of the people of Israel, who have all deserted me for their idols." Ezekiel 14:4‭-‬5 NIV We hear about this thing called idols all throughout the Bible. We think of them as little statues that symbolize God, but they can also be other things we can physically touch…Like idolizing our businesses. An idol is anything that we place at a higher value than God. The first commandment of the bible is “Have no other Gods but me” (Exodus 20:3). So how can we tell if we’ve turned work and entrepreneurship into an idol? Work has power over us Addiction and idolatry in entrepreneurship both occur when it has more power over us than God does. When we’re addicted to our businesses, we give more value or importance to the growth or to clients than it deserves. Nothing other than God should have ultimate power over us. In my case, instead of turning to God and praying about my marital problems or turning to Jesus’s example of love and patience and forgiveness, I let work soothe me. That’s an idol. Work Masters Us Addiction and idolatry happen in business when work masters us. When our businesses dictate our behavior, we might have fallen into addiction and idolatry of entrepreneurship. We also might deliberately change our behavior to be more acceptable to someone. These are also signs of addiction and idolatry. In my case, my businesses ups and downs absolutely change my behavior. Work Becomes Our God Addiction and idolatry in entrepreneurship take place when we worship or glorify our businesses rather than God. Where do you spend the majority of your time? Work? Why does it feel like death when our spouses tell us to turn off the computer and come downstairs to spend time with them? What do you spend most of your money on? What do you give most of your energy or effort to? All of these questions can be helpful in discerning an addiction or idolatry of work. In the last post, we defined an addiction as anything you do in your business that is harming you in some way and you can’t stop it. Combining that with today’s biblical definition, here’s a fuller definition: Pursuing our business more than God in a repetitive, habitual, or patterned way to get our needs met and bring us comfort, even though it’s harmful to us. Now that we are aware of the idol of entrepreneurship, we can begin the work needed to destroy the idol and put it in it’s right place in our minds. Godpreneur Rule #45:  When Godpreneurs face adversity in our business, we turn to God for relief and comfort, not addictions. #FindMyCalling #ArticulatingMyIdeas #StrengthenIntegrity

  • Overcoming Work Addiction: Step 6 – New Perspective

It’s kinda tough for an entrepreneur to admit weaknesses. I’m supposed to be this renegade innovator that doesn’t play by the rules, able to withstand a storm of issues, and at the front line of any business battle. I’m used to fixing everything, doing everything, being everything. It’s my business, after all. In becoming more aware of my work addiction, I’ve come to terms with the good and bad news:  this isn’t something I can fix. The reality is that us entrepreneurs are addicted to working. We’re looking to fill an empty space that can only be filled by God. Left to ourselves and our own efforts, we feel empty and lacking in our business. The bad news that we must come to terms with is that it’s impossible for us to find complete peace and wholeness….on our own. So where do we go from here?  Just live with it for the rest of our lives? The bible says "For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin." Psalms 32 3-5 Like the bible verse about notes, there’s bad news…but there’s also good news! The bad news is that we’re all dry bones, wasting away….until we actually acknowledge that we have an addiction and that we want to turn away from it!. And God didn’t design it for us to do it alone. God has given us Jesus Christ. Through Christ, God has weakened the grip of all our work addictions. And as we recognize what Jesus has done for us, our addition to working so much gradually loses its power with the help of the Holy Spirit. We’ve recognized our work addiction and patterns and objects around it!  Now let that lead us to God’s perspective. 4 Questions That Lead to God’s Perspective What business and work related situations cause me to be uncomfortable? This is the trigger that causes feelings of discomfort or stress. These situations lead us to seek out working more to make us feel better. In running my business, what emotions or feelings are the most uncomfortable for me to sit with? The role of the addiction and your work addiction object would be to soothe this discomfort. We each have certain feelings that scare us or make us feel exposed to more potential hurt in our businesses. We want to soothe it and get immediate relief ASAP. Our addiction object is our quick fix. What wrong decisions would I like to hit a rewind button and do all over again? These are our addiction objects. They could be cell phone use, staying up late to do more work, launching a product, starting a totally new business, missing dinner with the family to work, isolation at the office, controlling behavior over employees or contractors, verbal manipulation of clients, and so many more. What would a godly perspective of your stressful situation look like, or what would God say to me to help me? This helps us step back and evaluate the stressful situation knowing God is in control, loves us, and has a loving purpose for the particular stress in our life. I see it like a “check engine” light, an opportunity to grow!  He will also provide peace, soothing, relief from our burden, and power over temptation. Recognizing easy things we turn to at work to soothe our work addiction is easy. Uncovering behavioral addiction objects (like snapping at employees or manipulating clients) can be a bit trickier.  Knowing that God wants to take us through it, that’s amazing!. Imagine a world where, through intentional self-reflection, using these tips, we all see God’s loving purpose while accessing His deep healing for our entrepreneurial life. Godpreneur Rule #59: Godpreneurs self-reflect to uncover areas where God wants to break us…to heal us back stronger. #BecomeDisciplined #EnhanceFocus #GodpreneurAcademy

  • Be The Light

The greatest joy I have in business is when I get to share that I’ve been given a gift of help people find out what they were born to do.  Anyone – prospects, clients, employees, contractors, competitors, joint venture partners – everyone gets to hear my calling. Sharing my “born to do” identity gives the business conversation over to God.  It is no longer I who is explaining the service, it’s God working through me. We’re in business to serve people.  Period.  There is no business unless there’s another person involved that’s receiving or adding value to the product or service. We Godpreneurs have a choice: we can serve ourselves or we can serve God.  There can’t be two masters. We fall into times when we’re trying to meet our own needs.  If you recall those moments, they were surrounded by fear. We also have time when we’re at our happiest.  If you remember, that’s when you were feeling like entrepreneurship was worth the pain! God designed business like this on purpose.  He did it so that People would experience God even if they don’t have a relationship with Christ so that You could serve the best of you and in return receive your compensation for that. The Bible says "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace" (1 Peter 4:10) You have been given a gift.  You have been called to be a light in the marketplace.  You can hide that light in the supply closet or you can put it in the middle of your office for the world to see. We Godpreneurs have the amazing privilege to be used by God to impact our clients and employees in a way that many of them need to be impacted…By a God that wants a relationship with them too so they can, in turn, do the same. Imagine a world where the marketplace is flooded with entrepreneurs trying to authentically meet the needs of others by being the light of Christ.  Wow. #SharpenLeadership #FindMyCalling #FindingMyPurpose

  • A Thankful Attitude at The Office

There is so much need around us in our communities. So many opportunities for our team members to “do good.” And you probably agree with me in saying that we should step up to the plate to serve others, but where do we start? For me, its easy. I started a nonprofit in 2010 that does medical mission trips (www.joseshands.org). I’ve gotten my staff involved in fundraising events, creating marketing materials, and actually going on the trips! Easy for me, I have a nonprofit. But the Bible says in Galatians 6:10: “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” Our charitable works should not be limited to believers (“do good to all”), but our brothers and sisters in Christ should take priority (“especially the household of faith”). So yesterday I asked one of my team members to put together an acoustic worship night concert at our office and invite our friends at church to come over. I also told her we need to do more game nights with our churches and bring back the activities we used to do. This is serving our churches, the believers. It's not about what my church can do for me, its about what I can do to serve my church with the business resources God has blessed me with. What I've learned from doing these types of events in the past is serving others is a great way to combat entitlement in our employees and foster a thankful attitude. Find a place or activity where your team can serve together on a consistent basis and make sure your local body of believers is included if possible. When you serve together as a family, everyone will be blessed. For example, for Thanksgiving you can go to orphanages together. Make a list with your team. Call a meeting and get them involved. Put things on the calendar and commit to them as the most important things in your business, and don’t let any business problems come in the way of serving. Make serving others, especially fellow believers, a team priority. Looking for daily inspiration? • Reprogramming Your Mind to Wealth Requires Taking Inventory

His grace means it’s never too late to have our minds changed. I love reading books that completely rock my world and have me change the way I thought about something. For example, After I read Tim Ferriss’s “The 4-Hour Workweek,” I started hiring virtual assistants and reorganized my business to be able to live more freely. After I read Michael Gerber’s “The E-Myth,” I realized that you couldn’t be both the owner of the bakery, AND the baker. I learned that entrepreneurship is building a machine that others work in, leaving me free to do it again and again. Each one of these books transformed my mind; as a result, my businesses were revolutionized. It works the same for our money. If we want the money in our businesses to be different, then we need all new thoughts to come in and change our minds. If we’re not achieving the level of affluence we desire, it usually has less to do with external factors than with an unconscious inner setting in our minds. But we serve an amazing God that wants to revolutionize our businesses! And His grace means it’s never too late to have our minds changed. The bible says: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2) See, God’s in the business of transforming your mind and all the patterns the world had set it in. The first step to becoming more financially successful through your businesses recognizes that you inherited those thought patterns and this is why you’re not getting rich. Once you’ve broken the chain that binds you to those worldly thoughts, the next thing you need to do is recognize where those thoughts came from knowing where the enemy had infiltrated. It could be a good idea to fast and pray over the following questions and write down your revelations in a journal: What habits did you learn from your parents? What effects did your parent’s behavior patterns have on you? Which thought patterns do you follow? How much wealth are you programmed to achieve? Which unconscious strategies do you use to keep your account balances low/high? Did hearing “we can’t afford that” all the time cause you to believe that you could never afford anything? Who were your role models and how did they handle money matters? For us Godpreneurs, analyzing our current financial situation through the fact that God desires for our minds to be transformed can be especially enlightening, as it gives us a sense of how our programming differs from what God wants. The amount of money in our business bank accounts shows us how much money we’ve been preconfigured to earn right now. For changing that amount, the mind needs to be transformed. The failure of our businesses reveals how we’re unconsciously geared towards losses. To be renewed with a focus on success, our minds must change. Once we find out how we’ve been conditioned during our self-examination, all we have to do is realize that we have one option. It is crucial to adopt another way of thinking as we draw closer to God and allow our mindsets to be transformed. Flip the switch not to be conformed to the patterns present inside you by the world, and replacing them with new, Godly ones geared towards wealth. Godpreneur Rule: Analyze their behavior patterns on money and ask God for guidance #SharpenLeadership #MakeMoreMoney

  • Setting Up an Office Video Studio

I’ve been shooting video's in the middle of my office for years now. It can be pretty tricky. I know many of my readers want to do this, so I’ve put together a blog of the equipment you need to buy and some tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way. WHERE TO SHOOT I have 3 places I shoot in Conference Room: Shooting in a conference room will not only give you control over lighting and ambient noise, but it will keep you from distracting the entire office (and keep the entire office from distracting you). Desk: I love my setup by my desk because it’s convenient. I can be up and shooting in no time. You definitely need to have a desk setup! Office Shot: I love my “Office Point Of View” shot. This is where you see the entire background of my office and it gives the viewer proof that I actually have a space where I do business. SETTING YOUR BACKDROP Each of the spaces above can have a specific background that you want people to see. There’s a cool way of setting up a backdrop, and there’s a cheesy way. Shotting yourself sitting in a chair with some fake plants in the background doesn’t look cool….not anymore at least. It’s better to shoot in front of a solid colored background. WARNING: Please stay away from computer-generated backdrops…like shooting in front of a green screen and then the video editor replaces the green screen with a scene from the beach. This is very 1990’s news reporter style. In my office backdrop shot, I make sure I grab an angle that you can see the best parts of my office. I clean up, make sure everything is nice. I angle the camera so that the room is centered. If I am going to film with no background, filming against an off-white wall looks pretty boring, and can lead to nasty glare and reflections. Instead, use a roll of seamless paper from a photography supply store. STUDIO LIGHTS I use studio lights. The overhead lights in my office create nasty shadows on my face and glare on the top of my head. And since sunlight changes throughout the day in my office, it can be tough to maintain a consistent look. So I cover or turn off the overhead lights, I block out as much outside light as I can, and I bring in my own video lighting. You don’t need fancy lights to get a good image. 3 well-placed lights should get you just the amount of light that you need. Here’s a link to the lights I use: Neewer 1600W Photo Studio Video Softbox Lighting Kit (copy and paste this into Amazon). SOUND LIKE A PRO In my office, recording sound creates echo and reverb. This is not only distracting, but it sounds like you’re filming in a bathroom! To fix this, you need great recording equipment. First, I recommend you get the Blue Microphones Snowball iCE Black Microphone with Knox Studio Boom Arm & Pop Filter. You’ll need this for podcasting and filming from your desk. If you’re not filming from your desk, you’ll want a way to capture your sound that is NOT directly the sound your camera captures. You’ll need the Zoom H1n Digital Handy Portable Recorder. Get the entire kit that comes with the memory card, etc. You’ll need it all. WARNING: Watch out for distracting, noisy heating vents. Make sure you can turn off the ventilation system in the room where you’re filming. LEAVE (OR REMEMBER) YOUR SETUP If at all possible, leave your studio set up all the time. At my office, I’ve found that having a dedicated space to film my videos has allowed for greater spontaneity and simplified the production of new videos. If you’re planning on filming multiple videos, and if you can sell it to your team, having a dedicated space can save you a ton of time. So there you go! Now go shut down that meeting in your company’s conference room and get your studio set up! Just don’t tell them we told you to do it. SHOPPING LIST This is my own personal setup that I have at my office. Professional Camera Kit – Panasonic Lumix G7 (link to entire kit) Get the kit that comes with a memory card, battery, etc. You’ll need it all. Tripod – AmazonBasics 60 Inch Lightweight TripodThe camera kit above has a tripod, but if you’re buying things separately, get this tripod. Additional SD card – SanDisk Ultra UHS I Memory 64GThe camera kit above comes with a 32GB. You’ll want an additional 64GB. Extra BatteriesThe camera kit above has extra batteries, but if you’re buying things separately, you’ll need extra batteries. Desktop Web Camera – Logitech Widescreen Calling Recording I do all of my quick recordings, zoom calls, social media LIVES with this camera. Lights – Neewer 1600W Photo Studio Video Softbox Lighting Kit Buy this entire kit. It comes with bulbs. It’s ready to go. Microphone Desktop Microphone – Blue Microphones Snowball iCE Black Microphone with Knox Studio Boom Arm & Pop Filter You need this. Don’t think about it. Just buy it. External Recorder – Zoom Portable Recorder If you really want your video sound to be on point, you need to record your audio separately with this. Camera Mounted – Rode Video Mic Fuzzy Windjammer Kit This is if you’re in the car or outside and someone is recording you. Teleprompter Setup Teleprompter – Glide Gear TMP100 Adjustable iPad/ Tablet/ Smartphone Teleprompter Teleprompter Remote – Satechi Bluetooth Multi Media Remote IPad or Phone – I’m assuming you have a phone or ipad mini or android tablet you can use. You’ll need to download a teleprompter app. Teleprompter Tripod (heavy duty) – Mactrem Travel 11lb load #AgencyOwners #NewEntrepreneurs

  • You’ll Get Knocked Down, This Will Bring You Up

It took Edison 10,000 tries before he invented the lightbulb. Although I’m not inventing the lightbulb, I’m doing my own invention with my business.  I’m trying to create something of value that people need. But sometimes I can’t help but think “God if this entrepreneur rollercoaster was made for me, why is it so darn hard?!” I figured that if I’m in my Bible and walking with God, it would be smooth sailing from here. It’s easy for us to put on a victim mentality, blame someone else, or even quit when the going gets tough. We can sometimes think that we’re on this journey alone. We can become overwhelmed with defeat, even 100 defeats, let alone 10,000 defeats like Edison. But today I found some comforting and reassuring words from God that all Godpreneurs should remember always. "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord , And He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the Lord upholds him  with His hand." Psalms 37:23-24 NKJV You may be knocked down, God is extending his hand and saying RISE UP. You may be at the end of your strength, but God is saying “Keep following me and the path I’ve blazed for you, keep your eyes on me.” You may be tired of carrying all the weight, clearing all the trees in front of you by yourself, setting the path where you’re headed, but God is saying “I order your steps, I go before you, I make you walk by still waters”. See, we Godpreneurs have something that’s very different from normal entrepreneurs: We have a God that has a plan, shares it with us, and goes in front of us. We don’t have to do it alone. He delights when we follow. And best of all….the most comforting truth: When I fall, God catches me, picks me up, loves me, shows me grace, mercy, forgiveness, kindness, and then kicks my butt right into gear and says “RISE UP AND TAKE WHAT I’VE ALREADY PROMISED YOU.” Amen. #IncreaseEnergy #FindingMyBrand #SharpenLeadership

  • God’s TV Channel for Entrepreneurs

There are three types of visions: the one YOU have for your life, the one EVERYONE else has for your life, and the one GOD has for your life. When I first started my business, I didn’t have a relationship with God. The only two visions I was relying on was my own and whatever others suggested. But that doesn’t mean God didn’t have a vision for me, I just wasn’t tuned in to that TV Channel to see it. #NewEntrepreneurs #WheretoStartFirst

  • Giving the Credit to God

To talk about attracting money into our business, we first have to talk about giving. Why? It’s the natural order of things. To receive fruit from a tree, a farmer must give seed to the soil and toil the land. It’s the same way in business. I’ve also experienced that to receive from my clients, I must first give them something of value whether it’s my time, a free resource, or educational information. When I do this, it makes my customer more likely to give me their business. I’ll admit that I was one of those guys that didn’t take giving seriously. It was a combination of lies that I told myself like, I don’t have enough to offer, I have my bills to pay, and maybe next month I’ll throw a few bucks in. It wasn’t until I started giving from my business that I realized how stingy and greedy I was. I saw how selfish I had become, and how diametrically opposed my mindset was to the way God wanted me thinking. What I learned was that God wasn’t interested in my money, but instead, he has commanded me to give so that my heart would never be attached to the money of my business, but instead to serving others. You see, God wants to be the one to support us on our entrepreneurial journey. Our products and services are meant to support others, not us. God gets the credit for filling our bank account, not our clients. But we can’t come to that understanding without completely disconnecting our minds from the selfishness that money draws out of us. Listen, tithing and donations are all a touchy subject. It’s touchy because it’s the biggest tool the enemy uses to divide us from God…because money could be the biggest tool God can use in your business to do the most good in the world for His kingdom. You might be thinking, “But Alex, I can’t even pay for a website, how can I afford to give?” Listen, you’re not alone. We’re not alone. We entrepreneurs all go through the same issue of not having a stable income. It seems easier for the 9-5 guy to give because he’s only got to give from his account, and he can easily calculate the amount and have it automatically deducted. Us entrepreneurs sometimes don’t have that luxury, especially when the credit card company would like to get their payment…FIRST. Maybe you do have it all together in your finances and you’re a regular giver at your church, but you want to learn how God wants you to steward your money in your business so you can attract more of it in. The lesson is the same for both the giver and inconsistent giver: If you want to attract more, you must give more. Now wait, before you send your guilty tithe into your church, you have to understand the types of giving there are and some commandments on giving. In my studying to prepare for this touchy subject, I too learned the Bible explains four types of giving that we, including our businesses, can offer directly related to our finance departments: alms, first fruits, offering and the tithe. Each type of giving we do has a return to yourself and our businesses. The commandments for each are important to understanding because these are non-negotiables, especially the tithe and first-fruits. When we really understand these, then our mindsets will be ready to attract more because, in the end, if you want more, you must give more. The ROI of Tithing to Your Church Tithing (giving of 10% to your church) shows God your obedience and that your money isn’t really yours, you’re simply managing it for Him while you’re here. He takes the 90% you keep and blesses that to do more than the 100% would have. The bible says "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. (Malachi 3:10 NIV)" The way I see it, tithing is a weekly reminder that the money my business produces is not mine and that I need to be careful I how I manage it (budgeting) and what I spend the rest on (financing). And since tithing is what supports the church and its growth, my tithing encourages me to go out and get more business so I can bring more to the church (investment). Grow an Area of Your Business with an Offering While tithing helps you in your budgeting and financing departments, offerings cover sales and marketing. Let me explain the way I see it. We come out with products and services. We work hard to research, develop and market them. God opening rewards those efforts of your business when you give offerings. Giving an offering is us recognizing a specific thing in our business is totally out of our control and in God’s hands, and it implies, whatever resource is sown-the giver shall see a return of 30, 60, or 100-fold. When we entrepreneurs participate in an offering, we must have something we’re asking God to reward; a new partnership, a new marketing campaign, or a big proposal you pitched. Giving is a spiritual act but it translates to the natural through the demand for your efforts. The bible says "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." 2 Corinthians 9:7 NIV By giving an offering, you are purposing your money to a specific thing and so you give with a cheerful heart. This is setting up your mindset for victory and receiving abundantly from that act. Your mind and heart are ready for the success of that business move you’re asking for blessings over. So, tithing is an act of obedience and offering is an act of letting go and letting God. We must know the difference because it directly affects all of the cash flow in our businesses. What First Fruits Can Your Business Bring to the Table? Imagine you’re a farmer. You’ve invested all the money and time in hopes of a good crop so that you can go and sell it, make your money back and some profit as well. Since you’ve invested all you got into the crop, you’re probably very excited when the first fruits come out because you get to go and sell it and start paying some bills, maybe take your spouse out for dinner from all the hard work you’ve just put in. Not so fast! The bible says "Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine." Proverbs 3:9‭-‬10 NIV God is asking the farmer to bring the first part of his crops to the church, not sell it at the market right away. Why? It’s another mindset training. When we entrepreneurs give our first fruits, we’re training out the selfishness and ungratefulness that is holding us back from receiving all that God has for us. We’re demonstrating to God that we’re so grateful for what he’s done, how far God has brought us, and where he’s taking our business. Ok, so you’re not a farmer, you’re a web development company, for example. Here are first fruit offerings you can make You develop software and finally release it in the marketplace. The first sale is the first fruit. You take the first sales of the year and give it as first fruits to thank God for last year. This prepares your business to be blessed for the entire year. You launch a new product or service. The first sale is the first fruit. You start a new business partnership. The first sale is the first fruit. It should be a celebration! You should do it with joy and thanksgiving for what God has provided and one step closer to your own Promised land. How much is a first fruit? How many fruits do we give? Good question. You can offer the first sales, the first week of sales, or some other measure that feels right for you. The important thing is to feel the celebration. So, tithing works on your obedience mindset. Offerings works on your letting go mindset. In giving firstfruits; it is a measure of faith and heart. Giving of Alms to Charity through Your Business We’re called to be compassionate and good humans here on earth. The bible says "Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord , and he will reward them for what they have done." Proverbs 19:17 NIV I do medical missions every year through my charity, Jose’s Hands. This is me and my family’s efforts to give to the poor and underserved in other countries. I and my staff give in money and volunteer time, and expect nothing in return, and allowing God to become the repayment plan. I pray this teaching blesses you and your business. Imagine a marketplace full of cheerful givers in all areas of giving; alms, first fruits, offerings, and tithing. What kind of abundance would be flowing through our businesses if we reprogrammed our minds to this money mindset instead of the one culture has us wrapped around?
