My business partner and I have great chemistry together because we both are on the same page about a few critically important areas of our business. First, we both give to the church. Second, we both have the same calling of helping people and companies figure out what God created them uniquely to be and do in the marketplace. Third, we believe every business has a way to put God first in the way it operates. If we’re going to succeed in a business partnership, finding and maintaining common ground will be paramount to the success. It’s ok to be different in so many areas, but how we approach the business spiritually, financially, and emotionally needs to be in common. When entrepreneurs can’t agree on financial principles together, like where you cut cost and where you spend money, it can be a significant source of frustration. When the two partners don’t see the importance of each other’s spiritual growth as paramount to the entire business, then the business won’t grow as fast as it could. God wants us as Godpreneurs in business partnerships to make a commitment to build on a shared vision and move toward a common purpose. When we do this, our businesses embrace God’s big purpose for our joining together in the venture. The Bible says "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil". (Ecclesiastes 4:9) When you and your partner start a business together and share common goals, the reward is better because you’ve built your business on the common ground. When the forks in the road of business success come, you guys won’t be easily divided in the direction you’re headed in because you’ll share a fundamental common ground. Do you want to experience perfect oneness in your business partnership? The more of these “common ground examples” you share, the better the partnership’s purpose can shine You do most important things together like big meetings, tradeshows, and networking events. You share traits in common, like cultural or past experiences You both teach and instruct together about your services, products, and the brand message You impact others together so greatly that you gain respect and favor from everyone you guys meet Do you want to grow together, spiritually, with your business partner? Then each of you needs to: Individually decide to connect with God every morning Go to church (doesn’t have to be the same church) so you each can keep knowing God more Make time to connect with God, together. My business partner and I have lunch 2-3 times per week, and we purpose to take the conversations to God and let Him speak to us at this time. Do you and your business partner want to know the secret to being on the same page financially? This one starts with realizing the entire reason the business exists is that it’s a gift from God. When you walk around your business with a mindset that everything comes from God and belongs to God, you’re able to make wise decisions in the direction of your purpose. What this mindset does is alleviate the pressure of ownership and positions us as caretakers over God’s property. He’s the CEO, you’re both co-Presidents that have been hired to run the business His way. It’s His purpose, His mission, His vision, and you both steward the financial profits towards His desires. Just ask your partner: “God, what do You want us to do with Your profits?” We’re all busy. Entrepreneurs especially. There’s a lot we do and oversee. We have packed calendars. But as Godpreneurs in a partnership, we need to connect together and commit to fellowship. Our families should be hanging out together, we should be growing together. If we want blessings, significance, purpose, and connection in our partnerships, we need to build on common ground—spiritually, financially, and emotionally. If we can, we will indeed see that two is, in fact, better than one. I’ve been doing CrossFit since 2010. It’s a full-body workout that requires every ounce of your attention and commitment for a period. From beginning to end, you’re supposed to give it all. Workouts could be 7 to 25 minutes long…but it feels like hell when you’re in the middle of it. I’ve quit halfway through many times because I can’t take it. The times I quit, I feel terrible because I know I didn’t complete it. The times I finish it, I feel like I’m on top of the world. There’s a saying in CrossFit that goes “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.” It’s the same philosophy and mindset when we’re trying to restore the relationship with our business partners after a period of fighting. Whether we’ve been fighting for hours or years, choosing to fight well and restore the union is the only way the business will succeed. When we’re in the middle of a fight with our business partners, and we’re looking to resolve that issue we have, it’s important to know that it’s easier to start the restoration process than to finish it. Halfway through, we want to quit. An issue will resurface that threatens the entire process and send us back into the crazy cycle. Or, even worst, we think we’ve resolved the issue when the problem is much deeper and more work needs to be done to uproot the problem, but we believe we are good to move on and keep running the business. The bible says: "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up". Galatians 6:9 NIV Don’t quit halfway through your recovery with your business partner. When a business partnership is in need of healing, you might think to work through conflict until the pain goes away, especially since there are a business to run and mouths to feed. Just make sure the deeper issues causing the trouble are corrected. We should not quit halfway through a resolving of a fight with our partners. I remember my partner and I would get into these nasty email wars. We’d even copy our other partner who had nothing to do with anything. The first email would be some snarky remark. Then the reply would step it up a notch. Finally, the emails would turn to anger and insults and all-out war would ensue. Upon reflection, I think I would reply with insults and anger because that’s what I felt was being delivered to me. It was only fair, right? If he could insult me, especially copying my partner, that give me the open the door to do the same back, right? Playing fair is great when you’re my toddler son learning soccer for the first time. Playing fair is okay for my kid at the park. But playing fair in business partnerships can ruin the union and friendship like it did for me. We naturally think an eye for an eye, good for good and bad for bad. Playing fair is returning exactly what was done to us. It means we give our business partners precisely what they deserve when they do something good or bad to us… …but that’s not what Godpreneurs in partnerships do. The bible says: "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you". Ephesians 4:32 ESV Playing fair works for everyone when it’s nice things being done. But when you’re disrespected by your partner, that’s when the Christian is tested. You can yell and insult back. You can talk bad about them like they did about you. You can let them give him what he deserves. Unfortunately, many business partnerships operate on this premise, and it’s a significant reason why businesses of partnerships fail. But we also have the OTHER choice. As Godpreneurs, we can put aside what our business partner deserves and respond by giving them what they need – for us to rise above the offense and help them be better, not simply get even with them. We have the opportunity to express God’s grace. We can meet our business partners mistakes with a response that heals and moves the business to a whole new level. Imagine, especially if our partner isn’t Christian if we all did this? It would enable our business partnerships to grow, rather than further deteriorate. The wisest thing business owners can do to start every day is to get connected with almighty God. The wisest thing we entrepreneurs can do is decide that from this point on, before getting out of bed, we're going to connect with the President of our board of directors. Monday through Friday, every morning, we're going to pray something like: "Lord, I thank you that you have a plan for my business today. I thank you, Lord, that your timing is perfect. I thank you that you're bringing whatever you need to bring. You’ll protect me. You’ll guide me. You’ll lead me. If I go through any kind of suffering and hurt and disappointment and all the rest, I’ll trust you to bring me through that. Lord, I want to thank you that today I’m going to walk obediently before you. I’m going to trust the Holy Spirit to do the speaking in me to give me guidance and direction and give me your timing. Whatever you have for me and my business, I’m available to wait. I know that waiting will grow me, strengthen me, prepare me for what you have in my marketplace. I want to thank you for this day, and Lord, let my business be fruitful all day long." When you begin the business day that way, all of a sudden, even on the darkest of days you’ve ever seen on your entrepreneurial journey, the sun’s going to be brilliant. You know why? Because you are connecting with the owner and financier of your business, God will answer every single prayer that I mentioned. It’s His timing. It’s His way. It’s His plan. The Bible says: But I am trusting you, O Lord, saying, “You are my God!” My future is in your hands." As a business owner, you can say, "the future of my business is in your hands. (Psalms 31 14:15) Have you ever prayed like that about your business? You might want to memorize that verse and pray it every morning before you get up and begin the hustle and grind. You can pray something like: “I trust you, Lord, you’re my God, and my times are in your hands. God, I have more to-do's today than I have time to get done. I have so many appointments there’s no way I get it all done. Help me sort it all out, do what matters most in my business, and not worry about the rest. My calendar is in your hand. I surrender my schedule. I surrender my agenda. I give you my marketing plans. My times are in your hands, and that means I’m not going to fear. I’m going to trust you." If I ask you today whose business schedule do you live by, you’ll probably say, “well, by my own." And that's natural because, as entrepreneurs, we are self-employed, self-starting, and self-motivated. However, in your daily agenda or monthly marketing calendar, where is God in all that? Do you ever stop to ask him, "God, what you think about Thursday? What do you want in Quarter 3?" When you get up in the morning and get yourself dressed, get into your mode of transportation, and head to your office, do you ever stop asking God what His plan is for the business today? Do you ever stop to ask the question, "what would you have me do with my next 8 hours?" And when you're checked out from the business and on your way back to your family for the evening, do you ever ask: "Lord, how would you want me to spend this evening?" As impossible as that might seem, being that entrepreneurship feels like a 24/7 job, it's imperative that we God-First business owners stop and think, “How do you want to work in my family life this evening?" Most business owners will get up, do their little morning routine, and take off and never say anything to God until they get that first order cancellation or the first encounter with an irritating employee. The day starts to get overwhelming and stressful, and then there's the first connection, the first cry out to God for help. That is not what He intended. God intended that when you wake up in the morning, you get connected. It's not some 20-step ritualistic routine to bog you down. You simply start talking to Him with statements similar to these: Father, thank you for a good night’s rest; you know what lies ahead of me today in my business. Lord, I want to run my entrepreneurial race in your timing; don't let me get ahead, don’t let me linger behind, don’t let me step out of your calling over me. God, let me lead my company wisely today in your will so that tonight I’ll be able to look back and thank you for all that you’ve done. Every morning when I wake up, I remind myself that my marketplace is a 24/7 mission field. No matter what I'm doing - if I’m on a zoom call with my team, if I’m at a client's office, if I’m filming a marketing piece for my branding agency - I’m on a mission for Jesus. Listen, Godpreneurs, customers who meet you should meet Jesus. It doesn’t mean you look like him; it means the spirit within you is the same spirit of Jesus Christ. Remind yourself every day that God, the creator of the universe, loves you, and He has his eyes on your business dealings. You are His chosen representative in your industry, and He has called you to provide great services and products in the marketplace. When we all make it a daily morning habit to think about what God has done for our entrepreneurial journey, it’s going to bring joy, meaning, and purpose into our business lives and marketplaces worldwide. #WheretoStartFirst

Crucify our flesh – Our fleshly desires for personal satisfaction come at the expense of people around

Sometimes I think about how easy it would be to have a 9-5 job. Just tell me what to do, and I do that one thing. Set me on my path, lay out my duties and responsibilities for me, and make sure that check is in my bank account on the 1st and the 15th. But this is a big fat LIE, and I know it! This lie is really just a sub-lie of one of the enemy’s other favorite lies that “easy is better than hard.” Whenever I’m struggling in business, I sit down and look at the vision board I created for my future and realize that it could never happen with a 9-5 job. I picture myself standing in front of audiences teaching them about business. I imagine myself signing books, leading big paying consulting gigs, and in a cool office environment I co-created with God. And then I have a fake conversation with myself: “remember back in the day Alex, when you wanted to quit, when you were anxious about the business surviving, when you wanted to go back to working in an easy environment? Thank goodness you didn’t, bro!” Honestly, easy is seldom better than hard. The truth is that entrepreneurship is one of God’s best ideas, and a good business is an inexpressible joy. Work? Yes. Pain? Yes. Blood, sweat, and tears? Yes, all of that too… but it’s worth it. The bible says "From the fruit of their lips people are filled with good things, and the work of their hands brings them reward." —Proverbs 12:14 At some point I made new business with the mindset that I promised to stick through it all. I reaffirmed my commitment to follow through it, and agreed to engage fully to restore and build the business that God had for me. As He works in me today, I consciously look at how I’m changing into God’s image through my business. It’s a process and it will never be perfect (don’t expect that), but I know that I’m in God’s will, and that my business is worth every bit. The lie is that entrepreneurship isn’t worth the bother. The truth is that your business is worth the effort. God, renew my mind according to Your Truth. Take my worn-out heart and strengthen it. I can’t fix this on my own, so I ask You to be at work in my business life. Use it all, good and bad, to conform me to Your Son and give me the conviction that it is worth it. Some years back, I realized that I didn’t like entrepreneurship anymore. I knew I couldn’t just stop and close up my shop . I wasn’t just going there and getting a job. But I knew I couldn’t stay where I was. So, I looked at my business model and said to myself, “Do I really want to live like this for another 10 years?” When I get pounced and tossed by these thought of quitting, I picture Paul from the bible. Paul learned the lesson of contentment in extenuating circumstances. As he wrote Philippians, he was in jail, had no money, and was near execution; but he still found joy in Christ. Paul’s joy didn’t come from improved circumstances. It came from living according  the truth rather than buying into the lies of the world, the flesh, and Satan. It’s the same for you and your business. Remember, the secret of Godpreneurship is you walking the marketplace like Christ – in the Spirit, worshiping God by doing what you were born to do. Let’s do something about that, following the pattern Paul laid out in Romans 12:1-2: "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will." LIES Out of the eight entrepreneurial lies we’ve uncovered, identify the ones that are most pressing on your business right now: Entrepreneurship is irrelevant Owning a business is the only way to be happy Your business will complete you You can handle it on your own Getting a 9-5 is an option Working more is better for your children Your business is hopeless Godpreneurship isn’t worth it TRUTHS Read the truths that replace the lies that you find directly affecting you: Entrepreneurship is divine, timeless, and significant Solo-preneurship is a gift to cherish or a season to enjoy Christ is the only one who can complete you You need outside help to handle your business Getting a 9-5 is only an option in certain extreme cases Time with kids is far more important than time in the business God offers hope and restoration for your business A godly entrepreneur will bring Him glory and bless the business immensely Now, take both the lies and the truths to the Holy Spirit and ask that He would do the work that only He can do. Spirit, show me, right now, the lies that are oppressing my business. In the name of Jesus, I rebuke Satan who is the father of those lies. I reject the lies as destructive and wrong. Renew my mind. Replace the lies with life-giving Truth. Reveal to me now specific changes that You want to make in my attitude and my actions. I surrender to You now. Going back to when I first got into a partnership with my friends to start the marketing agency, we did everything on our own. I didn’t seek advice. After all, I had just paid $130,000 for an Ivy League education at Cornell. It wasn’t until after the partnership displaced and I went on my own that I came across the notion of “mastermind” and forming communities of advisors to help bounce ideas with. Even though my partnership was 3 of us, like marriage, I considered myself one in business with them. We couldn’t handle the struggles on our own. The enemy’s strategy is to divide and conquer. He wants me to think that I’m the only ones going through financial issues and employee crisis. He wants me to feel more embarrassed about my failure than I feel motivated to get help. He wants me to avoid the people who speak truth and love into my life. He wants me to disobey one of the foundational principles in Scripture: "Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching." —Hebrews 10:23-25 I need that. I need it even today as I’m writing this. It’s a lie to think otherwise. It’s called loving biblical community. Ironically, the worst I’m doing in business, the more I retreat and put up a front that everything is all good and I don’t need to meet with my counselors. That’s the enemy winning. This is the moment I actually need to stop everything I’m doing to meet up with another entrepreneur for advice. What’s going on in your key relationships? What’s up in your marriage? Are you trying to handle it on your own? If you want to go it alone, I suppose you can try, but why? Maybe it’s time to flush some pride and ego and get connected like God designed it? The lie is that you can get through the tough times in your business alone. The truth is that a Godpreneur surrounded by a wise biblical community will do better than a business owner in isolation. God, I accept that I am not an island. I need You in my business. I need what You provide through others when business is tough. I confess my prideful, independent flesh patterns. Make me willing to accept Your grace, wisdom, and support through other Godpreneurs. Show me whom You want me to connect with today. It was early 2016 and I found myself all alone at my office. I had just let go of a bunch of staff to “restart” my business in a new direction. The conversation in my head went like this Okay Alex, we really need to talk. You got all these clients, but you can barely stand them. Managing employees is a drag, having this rent is a burden, and the attacks from clients is unbearable You know you can get a job and go work for someone for waaaaay more than you’re making trying to do it on your own. No, no, no… There has to be a way to keep going! I stared more at the blank screen, hoping all my problems would go away. Then the conversation started again. What if I’ve been doing it all wrong. I’m great at what I do. I love what I do. I just don’t exactly love who I’m doing it for, and in the way I’m currently doing it. What are my best clients? What were my best experiences? I just stared at my screen in silence. It was a defining moment for my career as an entrepreneur. The future on my business hung in balance. I realized that the business I had constructed was a poor imitation of what God really had for me. I also knew I was locked into the journey of entrepreneurship because it’s what I was born to do. Would I just sit there and let my business continue to die? I’ve learned a lot since then, and I’ve become more and more convinced of a simple truth: The enemy divides, and the Holy Spirit unites. The enemy is at work in our businesses, our nonprofits, and our campaigns to further our causes, and some of his favorite tools are his lies. The enemy is a stronger business man than you’ll ever be alone, he’s out to make sure you don’t accomplish your Born to To identity. Through deception and deceit, his lies will convince us of many things that God has already declared ‘NOT TRUE’. If you believe those lies, your business can disintegrate before your eyes and you’ll wonder what happened – at least, that’s what happened to me. Paul laid out a counter attack: "Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible – and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” —Ephesians 5:11-14 That night alone at my office was a turning point. I didn’t know how I got where I was, and I didn’t know where I was headed. But I decided that I was going to put in the hard work, learn to be painfully honest with myself and my clients, and ask Christ to give me the business that He longed for me to have. As I journeyed out, I became acutely aware of several lies of the enemy that are rampantly believed in businesses that are in trouble, like mine was. Feeling trapped like I did? The truth can set your business free. Father, right here, right now, begin to expose the lies of darkness that I have accepted as true. Expose them with the light of Your Word. You get Entrepreneurial Personal Confidence I have people on social media who hit me up all the time When you have integrity in your business life, you become the kind of person that employees, vendors, There's a great feeling I get because my children's children will be able to read about the person I The Bible says "A righteous person lives on the basis of his integrity.

There’s a song I dedicated to my wife before we were married.  It’s a beautiful song that captured my emotions at the time I dedicated it. Later on, I took her to the concert and the band played "our song."  That song eventually became our wedding song. I also played our song on the car ride home from the hospital with our new baby boy.  It brought us both to tears. What's the song? It's called "Two is Better Than One" by Boys Like Girls. I love the song because it's a reminder of my commitment to her. Sometimes I’ll play it when I’m mad at her because I know it brings my heart back in alignment. Dedicating that song to her was powerful and has helped me in good times and bad. I think we all know the power of dedication because we’ve experienced this in the past. Whether it was a dedication to your wife or a song dedicated to someone that hurt you, hearing the song brings up strong emotions for us. We have the ability to have similar emotions in our businesses by dedicating our businesses to God.  We dedicate things so that we create a bond between the two subjects. How amazing would it be to dedicate your business to God so that there is an eternal bond and a higher sense of purpose and passion as you continue building? The Bible shows us what that looks like as we read the final chapters of Nehemiah. Nehemiah 12:27-30 reads "At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, the Levites were sought out from where they lived and were brought to Jerusalem to celebrate joyfully the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals, harps and lyres. The musicians also were brought together from the region around Jerusalem—from the villages of the Netophathites, from Beth Gilgal, and from the area of Geba and Azmaveth, for the musicians had built villages for themselves around Jerusalem. When the priests and Levites had purified themselves ceremonially, they purified the people, the gates and the wall." What´s going to happen now when people walk past the wall of Jerusalem? They will think of the time they dedicated it to God and the songs of praise and thanksgiving.  It will be a good memory impressed in their minds. Dedicating your business to God will add protection and align your heart with God’s.  It will give you a crutch to lean on during bad times. Similarly, it will give you a podium to speak from during the good times. When we dedicate something to God, we give it all to him. We hold nothing back. It is given in full and joyful surrender. It is all for God’s pleasure, all for his use, all for his glory. God’s desire is for us Godpreneurs to be like him…holy! (1 Peter 1.14-16). If we want to restore our businesses, we must first ask God to help us walk in holiness. Then, we will become “living stones being used to build a spiritual house” (1 Peter 2.5). How would you plan a dedication of your business to God? What elements would be included? What would such a celebration look like? A PRAYER OF BUSINESS DEDICATION God, we want to uplift your name among the people. Help us to dedicate ourselves and our businesses for your glory. I’ve read a whole lot of books on wealth, attracting money, getting rich, thinking rich, etc. None of them made me rich. I’ll admit that I have more SKILLS now that can give me a leg up on being wealthy, but the author or its strategies and tactics don’t make me wealthy. Wealth is acquired through the gaining of wisdom.  That’s why you can be rich, but not wealthy.  We can all be rich at moments in our lives, but wealth is a state of mind, a state of being.  It’s only gained through experience and the ups and downs of life. True financial wealth comes from learning from our past financial circumstances and making adjustments to the plan to continue gaining in the future. Students are rich with knowledge right before they take a test.  But wealth is determined by what they’ve retained for long-term usage. Deuteronomy 8:18 says “But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.” Deuteronomy 8:19 NIV What I’ve learned from the bible has made me rich at times.  But what I’ve retained from the bible has made me wealthy in wisdom.  The wealth in wisdom, over the long run, translates to financial wealth as well because I make better decisions in light of everything God is teaching me.
