Let’s Stop Pretending Business is Good

When a friend or family member asks me ‘how’s business’, its a natural reaction for me to say ‘GOOOOOOD, thanks for asking’!
But if I was being honest, I’m replying with that because either I’m not interested in engaging in conversation or I just don’t want this person knowing what I’m REALLY going through.
We’re entrepreneurs. There’s ALWAYS something wrong. Either internally in myself or externally in the business or world, there’s always something to improve upon.
But if we were to just admit that we have some kinks here and there to fix, I believe that God can begin to work in our hearts and in our business through others.
Proverbs 22:4 says,
"The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life."
Humility is having the courage to show that you’re not perfect and you don’t have it all together. Its admitting (and admiring) your faults. As entrepreneurs, its the most underused tool to excel your business because it’s contrarian to what we want people to know about us.
I learned years ago to humble myself in business because I realized there’s a whole world of people out there that have been through my struggles and can share their experiences of how they withstood, overcame and triumphed.
When someone ask me how business is, I say a positive and then follow up with a current struggle. This way I’m not all bad news, but I show my real strength and weakness.
Here’s the problem with always putting on a fake reply: you don’t give others a chance to possibly say some encouraging words and maybe offer some timely advice.
