Fighting for Fairness

I remember my partner and I would get into these nasty email wars. We’d even copy our other partner who had nothing to do with anything.
The first email would be some snarky remark. Then the reply would step it up a notch. Finally, the emails would turn to anger and insults and all-out war would ensue.
Upon reflection, I think I would reply with insults and anger because that’s what I felt was being delivered to me. It was only fair, right? If he could insult me, especially copying my partner, that give me the open the door to do the same back, right?
Playing fair is great when you’re my toddler son learning soccer for the first time. Playing fair is okay for my kid at the park. But playing fair in business partnerships can ruin the union and friendship like it did for me.
We naturally think an eye for an eye, good for good and bad for bad. Playing fair is returning exactly what was done to us. It means we give our business partners precisely what they deserve when they do something good or bad to us…
…but that’s not what Godpreneurs in partnerships do.
The bible says:
"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you". Ephesians 4:32 ESV
Playing fair works for everyone when it’s nice things being done. But when you’re disrespected by your partner, that’s when the Christian is tested.
You can yell and insult back. You can talk bad about them like they did about you. You can let them give him what he deserves. Unfortunately, many business partnerships operate on this premise, and it’s a significant reason why businesses of partnerships fail.
But we also have the OTHER choice.
As Godpreneurs, we can put aside what our business partner deserves and respond by giving them what they need – for us to rise above the offense and help them be better, not simply get even with them.
We have the opportunity to express God’s grace. We can meet our business partners mistakes with a response that heals and moves the business to a whole new level.
